Nafpaktos is a seaside town of Aitoloakarnania in the Corinthian Gulf, is built between Antirio and the estuary of Mornos river, it is one of the oldest Greek cities that experienced periods of great prosperity and was associated with important historical events. This is confirmed by its strong fortification, at the port, through three successive walls and at the castle. It has been described as a traditional settlement.
It is said that its name derives from the words nautical and pygnimi, which means “build ship”. During the Roman domination the town it flourished due to its important position just across Peloponnes. In 1821 the locals took part in the Revolution. The Turkish resistance was really powerful and lasted for several years. On April 18, 1829, it was finally liberated by the Turks, when Andreas Miaoulis blocked the port of the city and forced the Turks to surrender the fortress.
