Corinth is a city and an important port of the Peloponnese. It is the capital of the Prefecture of Corinth and the third largest city in the Peloponnese Region with 30,177 inhabitants, according to the 2011 Census.
The town of Corinth is aside to the sea, at an altitude of 10 meters. It is located on the edge of the Isthmus of Corinth, the narrow strip of land that joins Peloponnese with Central Greece, on the east side of the Corinthian Gulf.
The modern city, as rebuilt in the mid-19th century, has excellent vertical layout with vertical roads leading to the sea. The southern part of the city, called Settlement, or officially named Ionia, is relatively unevenly structured as it was developed gradually and without an organized plan during the arrival of refugees coming from Mikra Asia after the Asia Minor Disaster.
