Eretria is a coastal town of Evia, south-east of Chalkida, opposite to the northern coast of Attica, in the South Evian Gulf. In antiquity, around the 6th and the 5th century BC, it was one of the most important cities of the Greece.
Subsequently, it was not considered an important settlement anymore, so it gradually became deserted.
In modern times, after the destruction of the Psara, a town was founded on the site of the ancient city originally named Nea Psara, but then continued to be called Eretria.
It has a population of 4.166 inhabitants, according to the 2011 Census. The Geronta village (4 inhabitants), the Magoula (1.063 inhabitants) and Malakonta (1.097 inhabitants) villages, constitute the Municipal Community of Eretria, with a total population of 6.330 inhabitants.
The modern town of Eretria is a popular beachside resort that can be reached from Skala Oropou, Attica by ferry or via Halkida by road.
