Spetses is a historical island of the Argosaronic Gulf near the Argolic Peninsula, to the right of the entrance to the Argolic Gulf. The island got its present name from the Venetians after calling it Isola di Spezia which means Island of Perfumes due to the existence of so many flowers.

Until 1948, it was part of the old prefecture of Argolidocorinthia, which is now split into Argolis and Corinthia. In ancient times, it was known as Pityoussa, and later as Petses. What make Spetses so unique is the absence of private automobiles in the town limits. The most common means of transport is either walking, or with horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, and motorcycles.

The only automobiles permitted in the downtown area are taxis and delivery vehicles. Ferries and high speeds depart from Piraeus frequently. Trails encircle the island and total about 25 to 30 km. Beaches that are close to the town are: Agios Mamas in the center of town, and Kaiki (previously College) beach 1 kilometer to the northwest and Agia Marina 2 kilometers to the south, both of which also offer a variety of water-sports. Public buses serve tourists that want to visit beaches that are not proximate to town, such as Zogeria, Agioi Anargiroi, and Agia Paraskevi.
