Monemvasia or Monovasia, known to the Franks as Malvasia, is a small historic town in the eastern Peloponnese, of the Epidaurus Limiras province, in the Prefecture of Laconia. The seat of the municipality is the Molaoi town.

Its area consists mostly of a large plateau, 100 metres above sea level and up to 300 m wide and 1 km long.

The town’s name is a compound word, derived from the two Greek word, mone and emvasia, meaning “single entrance”.

It is well known for the medieval fortress, on the homonymous “Rock of Monemvasia”, which is literally a small islet connected by a 400-meter-long bridge from the coastal town up to the Laconian coast.
