Nafplio or Anapli is a city in the Peloponnese, the capital of the Regional Unit of Argolida, the seat of the municipality of Nafplio and the main port of the eastern Peloponnese. According to the 2011 census it had a population of 14.203 inhabitants. It has been described as a traditional settlement and was the capital of the Greek state during the period 1828 – 1833. Nafplio is known for the small fortress of Bourtzi that built on an islet. It is also known for Palamidi, a Venetian fortress that dominates the city and for Akronafplia (Turkish Itch-Kale), another Venetian fortress, on the homonymous peninsula, and the place where Ioannis Kapodistrias was murdered.
According to Greek mythology, the site of the present city was founded by Nafplios, who enhanced it with Cyclopean walls. Archaeological finds prove that the city exists since the Mycenaean years.
Nauplio is a popular destination for residents of Attica and the Peloponnese as it is a short way drive from both areas. The most beautiful buildings in the city are the Armansburg Mansion and the Archaeological Museum on Syntagma Square. There is also a branch of the National Gallery based in the city.
