It has always been part of the Municipality of Markopoulo and the port of Markopoulo Mesogaias, according to the 2001 Census it had 7.131 permanent residents and about 90,000 holidaymakers during the summer months. The Necropolis (1400-1100 BC) is located on the north side of the bay, at Agios Spyridonas. Public baths and a large ancient public building have been found in the center of the city above Gregou’s promenade.
