Sounio is alternatively called “Kavo columns” or “Kavokolones”. It is the cape located on the southernmost tip of the Attica coast. Its beaches are rocky and steep. It rises almost perpendicular to the sea at a high altitude, westward forming a small cove at the foot of it, which is separated with an isthmus by a further eastern cove. Its location set it a great sight to view the beautiful sunset over the Aegean Sea. Sounion is known for its important geographical location and for the ruins of the ancient temple of Poseidon that lie there, the god of the sea in classical mythology.
In the recent years, the wider area has been declared as a national park, due to its environmental value. The Sounion National Park was founded in 1974 and its core area extents to 750 hectares. It also has an extension of 2.750 hectares of regional area.
