Ymittos is a mountain in Attica. It is located on the east side of the Athens Basin. It rises between the Athenian basin and the Mediterranean with a north-to-south direction from St. John the Hunter’s passage, ending over Voula and Vari. It is widely covered with green, with its highest peak reaching 1026 m. Geologically, Ymitos belongs to the Atticocycladic zone. Its rocks contain limestone, slate and large masses of marble and marble shale.
The mountain is directly linked to the history of ancient Athens. According to findings and historical sources, shrines were founded in antiquity. On the west side of the mountain there were marble quarries, which were used to build monuments in the Hellenistic and Roman times.
Despite all the encroachments, the uneven construction of his roots and the devastating effects of the fires, Ymittos has still prich vegetation. It is distinguished for the wide variety of flora and fauna that make it an important habitat of Attica.
