Stoupa is a settlement of Messinia that belongs to the Municipality of West Mani. It previously belonged to the Municipality of Lefktro, until the implementation of the program Kallikratis in 2010. It is 45 km from Kalamata and neighboring to Kardamili.

It is a popular tourist destination because of the beaches of Kalogria and Stoupa, but mainly because of Nikos Kazantzakis’s book “Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas”, who wrote during the period he lived in the area. Nikos Kazantzakis stayed for two years, during 1917-1918, in a house he rented on the beach of Kalogria.

There, he wrote the aforementioned book, placing his hero George Zorbas in the lignite mine of Prastova, an area between Stoupa and the new Suburb.

Eastern of Stoupa, in the village of Lefktro, there is a castle that was the temple of goddess Athena and her statue, according to Pausanias – the well-known Greek traveler and geographer of the second-century AD. During the rule of the Franks, the castle was rebuilt and renamed \”Beaufort\”, which means \”nice castle\”.

The Prastova mine in the New Suburb, where Nikos Kazantzakis worked with Alexis Zorbas, is also accessible to tourists. The mountainous routes of Taygetos, of the canyons of Vyros, of Nupantis and Koskarga are ideal for cycling, hiking and mountaineering. The area is touristic and provide a variety of services and activities.
