Xanthi is a city of Thrace in northern Greece. It is the capital of the homonymous Regional Unity and the seat of the homonymous municipality. It is administratively part of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Its population is 56.122 permanent residents, according to the 2011 Census. It is built on the outskirts of Ahladovouno and the Kosynthos river flows through it.

Xanthi was occupied by the Ottomans in 1375. At the end of the 14th century the colonization of the area with Muslims and the Islamization of the mountainous areas of the prefecture began.

During the Greek Revolution of 1821 Thrace did not remain uninvolved. The Xanthians participated in the struggle for independence with Captain George Dimitriou as their main captain. The revolution here, was quickly overthrown, as Thrace was near the center of Ottoman power.

In the early 1970s the presence of the Democritus University of Thrace and the 4th Corps of the Army recovered the area. Since 2000, there has been an intense urban activity as a result of the need to house thousands of students in the city\’s university schools.
