Ptolemais, formerly Kailaria, is a city of Kozani Regional Unity in western Macedonia and the seat of the municipality of Eordea. It is about 28 kilometers from Kozani, the capital of the Regional Unity, and is the second most populous city of Western Macedonia.

Since the 1960s, the E65 highway has bypassed the city to the east. Ptolemais is characterized as Greece\’s energy hub due to thermal power plants exploiting the region\’s lignite for power generation. The region of Eordaia along with the rest of Upper Macedonia is the ancient cradle of the Macedonians.

The city was named after Ptolemy, the general surgent of Alexander the Great, where he was later proclaimed King of Egypt. His statue is located in the central square of the city.

The former name of the city was Kailaria that was consisted of few villages. The name Kayılar (Turkish: Kayılar) meant “mud”. The name had to change in favour of the restoration of the Ancient Macedonian historical heritage of the area, after the incorporation of the area into the Greek State.
