Spata is a city in eastern Attica, which was the seat of the former municipality of Spata-Loutsa, but became the seat of the new municipality of Spata – Artemis, after the Kallikratis Program. It is located on a hill, in the center of the plain of the Mediterranean. It administratively belongs to the Prefecture of East Attica.
The administrative boundaries of the municipality extend 20 kilometers east of Athens, from the mountainous terminals of Ymittos and Penteli to the Petalion Gulf. It is surrounded by the cities of Paiania, Pallini, Pikermi, Rafina, Artemis and Markopoulou.
In the recent years, the area has got significant growth, both residential and commercial, due to the operation of the neighboring Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. It also has a very good public transport connection by bus lines running from Artemis and Spata to Doukissis Plakentias station in Athens.
The creation of Spata Airport after 2000 brought rapid residential development to both the city of Spata itself and the cities of Gerakas, Pallini and Artemis.
Traditionally, retsina wine, olives and olive oil, figs, almonds, pistacchios and wheat have been produced and harvested at the whole area. Thus, viticulture is a usual occupation for locals and many modern wineries specialize in vinifying the local Savatiano grape.
The Attica Zoological Park, or “Attica Zoo”, is located in Spata. Attica Zoo opened in May 2001 and is Athens\’ and Greece’s largest zoo, hosting the world\’s third largest collection of birds.
