Delphi is situated along the slope of Mount Parnassus, and includes the Sanctuary of Apollo, the site of the ancient Oracle, about 15 km away, is the harbor-city of Kirrha on the Corinthian Gulf.

It was originally one of the cities of ancient Fokis, but gradually the role of the city was strengthened and developed into a Greek base center and a holy place for the ancient Greeks.

The Delphi-Arachova area consists of a small plain crossed by the Pleistos and Ylatho streams, which in some places become very narrow. The area is planted with dense olive groves that cover most of the of the surface, while the other half is covered by low, dense vegetation suitable for grazing. The area was declared a protected area in 1981 due to its old trees that are dated back in more than a hundred years.
