Mikrolimano or Fanari or the port of Koumoundouros, formerly Tourkolimano, is today a tourist attractive location and is included in the wider district of Kastella. In the Byzantine period, it was called Fanari probably because of the presence of a lighthouse on the city’s entrance. It is located northeast of the Piraeus Peninsula bordering to the Neo Faliro district. Today, because of the cafes and nightclubs it has stimulated the vivid nightlife.

In 1925 the special committee that was set up for the correction of the toponymes and points of Piraeus officially named it Munichia Port, but it failed to be established because it sounded weird in modern Greek language. In 1967, the mayor Aristides Skylitsis decided to introduce the new name Mikrolimano.
