Argyroupoli is a part of the Municipality of Elliniko – Argyroupoli in the South Section of Athens, 9 km southeast of the center of Athens, on the southern outskirts of Ymittos, it borders with the municipalities of Glyfada, Alimos and Ilioupoli.

It was founded by Pontian refugees from Argyroupolis of Pontus, after the persecution they suffered from the Turks,  and the population exchange, in the years 1918 – 1926. They first named the settlement New Argyroupolis but later on the town was widely known as Argyroupolis. The city is literally named after the Greek words argyros and poli that means silver and city. Since July 2013, Argyroupoli has been served by the homonymous Athens metro station, located on Vouliagmeni Avenue, very close to the city’s main square.
