Astakos is a Greek word that means “lobster”.
Astakos is a coastal area of the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania, at the West of Greece, and was formerly the municipality of this area. It is built on the bay of the homonymous bay on the eastern shore of the Ionian Sea and at the foot of Mount Veloutsa (Dikoforos), which is the coast of the Akarnanian Mountains. It is 16 km southeast of Kalamos and 30 km southwest of Agrinio.
The small port town of Astakos is the link between the mainland region of Aetoloacarnania and the Ionian Islands. It belongs to the municipality of Xiromero.
It takes its name from the ancient Acarnanian town Astacus and was named Dragamesti in the Middle Ages. Attractions include monasteries and historical sites, such as the Byzantine castle of Dragametus and the archaeological site of ancient Astakos, where the ruins of a temple dedicated to Zeus Karaos are preserved.
