Lamia formerly named (from the 8th to the 19th century) Zitouni, is a city and capital of the Fthiotida Regional Unity. It has a population of 52.006 inhabitants and is located on the slopes of Mount Othry, near the river Sperchios.

It is said that the city was named after the mythological figure of Lamia, the daughter of Poseidon, and queen of the Trachineans.

The fortification system of Lamia consisted of two zones, the acropolis and the wall of the lower city. The surviving fortification wall has a triangular floor plan and is preserved in good condition due to continuous repairs. Its perimeter reaches 600m. and its height varies to a north west angle of 13 meters. Reinforcing towers are raised near the gates, the corners and to all the weak points of defense.
