Lefkada or Lefkas is an island of the Ionian Sea and together with the islands of Corfu, Kefalonia, Ithaki, Zakynthos and Paxos constitute the region of the Ionian Islands. It is the fourth largest island in the Ionian Sea (320 km2) and the fourth most populated with approximately 23.000 inhabitants according to the 2011 census. Due to its geographical location it is connected to Aitoloakarnania by a floating bridge about 20 meters long.

Lefkada and Evia are the only two islands in Greece that are accessible by road.

Just outside the city and just opposite the floating bridge is the Venetian castle of Agia Mavra. The castle is a model of fortification art. Inside the city there is the Archaeological Museum, which hosts artworks, as well as findings from the Paleolithic up to Roman times.
