Meteora is a cluster of enormous dark sandstone rocks rising out of Kalambaka, near the first Pindos and Chasia.

The monasteries of Meteora are the second important monastery complex after the Athos Mountain and are built on the top of the rocks. It has been historically reported to be thirty of them but only six of them are currently operating. They have also been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1988.

The wild and inaccessible landscape was a convenient place for Christian herders who settled in the area in a date that is not exactly known. According to various Byzantine scholars’ opinions, it is believed that it began before the 11th century.

Meteora is a protected habitat of the Natura 2000 network, the landscape includes wooded hills with spectacular steep cliffs, the riverside valley of the Lithaios and Murga Rivers, broadleaf deciduous forests, plane and oak forests, and shrubs lands.
