Theva (also Thebes in ancient Greek) is a city of Viotia, one of the oldest in Greece, the seat of the Municipality of Thebes. According to the 2011 census, it has 22.833 inhabitants. According to the legend it was built by Kadmos and has great historical and mythological significance. Among the most important Thebans were Epaminondas, a general of antiquity who made Thebes the main ruler of Greece, and Pelopidas, the leader of the famous Holy Company.

The Acropolis of Theva was called “Kadmia”, thus referring to its founder. The plural of the name Theva is due to its famous Fourteen Gates, closely linked to the legend of Niovi. Theva was also called in ancient times Karnakas the one of Egypt. This name is said to be a derogation of the Egyptian word for \”city\”.

Today Theva is an important city of Viotia and the seat of a municipality, and by 2011 it was the capital of the homonymous province of the prefecture.
