Vonitsa is a small town of Aitoloakarnania with an official population of 4.703 inhabitants, according to the 2011 Census. It is the seat of the Municipality of Aktio – Vonitsa, while it was the seat of the former Municipality of Anaktori, which numbered 8.830 inhabitants. Vonitsa is a coastal city, built on the south side of the Amvrakikos Gulf at an altitude of 10 meters.

The city’s main attraction is its Venetian castle, which is the most well-preserved in Greece. It was built in the early 11th century (around 1070) by the Venetians, when the Byzantine emperors (Komnenoi) who were allowed to build the fortress and exploit the port commercially.
