Karystos is a seaside town and port in South Evia and is the seat of the homonymous municipality, while it was the capital of the homonymous former province. In 1951 it had 3.118 inhabitants, while its population at the 2011 census was 5.112.

Karystos is built at the cusp of the homonymous gulf at an altitude of 20 meters and has Karystos port just 61 nautical miles from Piraeus. It is also connected by road to Athens via Chalkida, which is a 118 km distance.

Karystos has a lot of good street layout with wide roads and squares. Otto the King of Greece had made specific plans over the town and completed it according to his plans. Next to the harbor and the archaeological museum, there is an old Venetian fortress (Bourtzi) of the 13th century that was repaired and restored in 1960 by the Archaeological Society.

The city’s archaeological museum hosts exhibits of statues and inscriptions from all over Karysto, and findings from the Ochi and Styrian Dragon Houses.
