Plaka is a district in the center of Athens under the Acropolis. It borders to the south with the Makrigianni district, to the east with the Stylis area of Olympian Zeus and Zappeion, to the north with the shopping center of Athens and to the west with Monastiraki. It has been described as a traditional settlement and is also known as the “District of Gods”. In the Post War period, all Plaka’s buildings were considered preserved. That distinguishes Plaka as the only district in Athens where one can see the city as it was 100 years ago. Museums, taverns, restaurants, cafes and tourist shops operate in the area, while buildings of famous citizens of old Athens are preserved.

In the section of Plaka towards the Acropolis there is the Cycladic-style district called Anafiotika. The cost of renting or buying land in Athens was expensive. So Anafiotis builders who (in the second half of the 19th century) were looking for a neighborhood to build their homes, found the perfect district in the area.

Similar areas, in which internal migrants relocated the architecture of their place of origin, existed elsewhere in Athens, but failed to survive the building reform over the years.
